Greetings, All,

To help address any questions or concerns about a potential government shutdown, we’ve compiled the following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for staff and their families. The bottom line is that we will continue to serve children and families.

Staff and Parent FAQ: Potential Government Shutdown & Head Start

Q: What is a government shutdown?
A: A shutdown happens when Congress and the President cannot agree on the federal budget in time. This means that some government offices temporarily suspend specific work until an agreement is reached.

Q: Will Head Start programs close?
A: No. Head Start staff are not federal employees, so programs continue to serve children and families during a shutdown.

Q: Will my child’s classroom or center be affected?
A: Services for children and families are expected to continue as usual. You should not see disruptions to daily activities.

Q: What might change?

  • Some government staff may not be available to answer questions or provide support.
  • There could be delays in paperwork or grant notices from the federal government.
  • Systems like the Payment Management System (PMS) will stay open, but technical help may be delayed.

Q: How is our program preparing?

  • Making sure our systems and records are up to date.
  • Staying connected with NHSA and our regional/state associations for updates.
  • Coordinating with community partners (like food banks and schools) in case families need extra support.

Q: What can families do?

  • Stay informed by reading the updates we share.
  • Continue to bring your child to school as usual.
  • If you have any concerns or challenges, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Bottom Line:
Head Start will continue to serve children and families, even in the event of a temporary government shutdown. We will keep you updated with any new information.
