Dr. Sharon Small, a longtime educator in San Antonio since 1981, is the Chief Executive Officer of Parent/Child Incorporated (PCI), a family-oriented agency focusing on Early Childhood Development. Dr. Small began her career in Edgewood Independent School District in 1981 as an Early Childhood Migrant reading and math specialist at H.K. Williams Elementary and taught Language Arts and Math to 4th and 5th grade students. Dr. Small then went to Northside ISD’s Lloyd Knowlton Elementary in 1987 where she taught third grade, fifth grade and Math as a Math Specialist. She became Vice Principal at Oak Hills Terrace Elementary in Northside ISD in 1998 and, in 2003, she was named the Principal of Shirley J. Howsman Elementary. Dr. Small was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Parent/Child Incorporated in 2006 overseeing all programs under her auspices to include Head Start, Early Head Start, the Child and Adult Care Feeding Program, Day Care Homes and the newly acquired Early Head Start/Child Care Partnership.

Dr. Small graduated from John F. Kennedy High School and was a proud member of the Mighty Rocket Band and inducted in the Edgewood Hall of Fame on October 20, 2016. She has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from St. Mary’s University of San Antonio Texas, a master’s degree in Special Education, a master’s degree in Education - Mid-Management Education and a doctorate in the Philosophy of Leadership Studies from Our Lady of the Lake University at San Antonio: Dissertation: The Relationships of Transformational /Transactional Leadership Behavior of Elementary School Principals with Teacher Outcomes: Extra Effort, Effectiveness and Satisfaction.

Dr. Small is a member of the National Head Start Association (NHSA) and serves on the board of the Texas Head Start Association (THSA). She was selected by the Region VI Office of Head Start to serve as Coach for new Early Head Start Directors through the Program Management and Fiscal Operations (PMFO) Initiative and the Region VI T/TA Network. She is an inducted member of the Exceptional Scholars Talented Tenth, member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Texas Association for the Education of Young Children (Texas AEYC), Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA), American Association of University Women  (AAUW),  National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), National Association of Female Executives (NAFE),  Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), Phi Delta Kappa (PDK), and the San Antonio Black Achievement Association (SABAA).

Knowlton Elementary Northside Independent School District, Teacher of the Year H.K. Williams Elementary Edgewood Independent School District.

Dr. Small is the sixth of seven children born to Calasca Davis Murphy and Porter Calvin Murphy, Sr. (both deceased). She and her husband Ernest Small, a Retired USAF Veteran and business owner, reside in San Antonio and married over 37 years. Included in her family are their two twin dachshund puppies – Ted and Sezer.

Dr. Sharon and Ernest “Ernie” Small are active members of Grace First Baptist Church, where her husband is the President of the Male Chorus. Dr. Small has been a member of Grace since 1985. She is a member of the Board of Directors, member of Sunday School Class #8 and has served as the Announcement Clerk and the Sanctuary Choir.
