Friday, June 19, is Juneteenth. The annual holiday recognizes the historic day when Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, carrying a decree officially ending slavery back in 1865. The declaration led to an outpouring of spontaneous celebrations and gatherings from which Juneteenth was born.
